Movies

Maybe, I don’t know yet, start choosing films based on who directs them.

Choose movies based on

1. What the story is about

2. Who’s acting in it

3. Who directed it

4. Serendipity and openness

Tea

Have an electric tea kettle with multiple settings for black and green tea.

Have an infuser of some variety than accommodates loose teas.

Have a nice clear glass mug (or 2).

Boil your water, steep your tea according to directions, pour into the mug (or 2), and enjoy your tea, sweetened , unsweetened, however it works for you.

Offer tea to anyone who steps foot into your kitchen, show them all of the fabulous varieties of loose tea you have a purchased, and utter “Man, this darjeeling is amazing,” if you find it to be so.

Cell Phone Driving

Absolutely no cell phone while driving, uh, eh, uh, but if you need to then you do.

Used Books

Do not read books that have been underlined by someone else.

It’s the equivalent of watching a movie with someone who says “Oh, you’ll love this part” which makes you totally hate that part. It’s very distracting.

If you want someone’s thoughts on a book, it’s probably better if you’ve read it clean first, and then, well, then, it would be really cool to have a copy of the book with someone’s notes in it.

Laptop Cables

This is a sad truth, but system: if you bring your laptop somewhere with you you must always bring your power cord.

Reasons for this are as follows:

1. Even the best batteries only last 5ish hours, which might work for the amount of real work you need, but

2. You never know if you’ll be kept overnight, and you may need to do work the next day.

Balaclava

Why not wear a balaclava? They’re a scarf, a hat, and earmuffs in one airtight package.

It bothers me that so few people are willing to be comfortable because it looks ridiculous.

The system: Don’t worry about looking ridiculous if it means you’re going to be warm and comfortable.

Therefore, the system: Wear a balaclava.

Filing

When you put a manila folder back into its filing space, put your hand in the back and guide it down so that you know it’s going in the right spot. Also, with books, put your hand in the back so you don’t bend covers.

Fingerless Gloves

While the make you look like a hobo, or a character from Oliver Twist, fingerless gloves are the way to go in these situations:

1. Staying warm in a cold house, but where you need your fingers to do something

2. Staying warm outside, but where you need your fingers to do something

3. Getting away with wearing gloves in the fall, because they’re not really gloves. But if your hands are cold, you still want to keep them warm.

I haven’t tried it yet, but I’m planning on wearing them inside of mittens as a double layer so that when I need to do something in the freezing cold requiring detailed digitry, I can stay warm throughout the process.

Dogs

Dogs, you’re back in the system sally doghouse.

I gave you a shot, and you have disappointed me again.

But rather than give my system to human owners of dogs, I will give a system to dogs:

1. Start ignoring your owners and start finding companionship with other dogs

2. Leave me alone

3. Take a shower, or bath, with Dr. Broner’s Magic Soap and start wearing some sort of doggy deoderant

4. Cultivate some manners

5. Find a private place to do your business

6. Learn a language other than “Loud sound! Loud piercing painful to the human ear sound! Loud sound Again, because I don’t think you heard me the first time!” Maybe French if you’re a terrier, or English is cool, or even Chinese or Thai.

7. Get a job and stop mooching

8. Eat a better balanced diet

9. Live in the wild, this domestic life that humans chose for you is not what you really want. Protest and fight for your rights! “We’re wild! We hunt! Let us free!”

10. Start developing a taste in music other than someone opening the door. There are sounds in nature that can make you happier than that.
